Two years on after the 2007 earthquake in Southern Peru, many affected families continued living in temporary structures made of plastic and bamboo sheets, with the dirt ground as the floor. The Quevedos family was one of them. STOREY Architects designed and constructed a bamboo structure as an alternative to the temporary solutions found in the area. The family’s new home was constructed by an international team of volunteers that included a carpenter and a structural engineer working alongside volunteers with no prior knowledge in construction.
The main issues addressed were: [1] A permanent home rather than the temporary structures generally offered, [2] A safe place, in terms of earthquake survival as well as personal security, [3] Financial viability- the cost is the same as the temporary solutions found, [4] Developing upon a local construction method that can be self-built by locals with no prior construction knowledge or specialist tools.
